At a time of alarming pushback on women’s rights and gender equality, the world urgently needs bold and inclusive leaders who are lighting the way for women and girls in all their diversity.
That leadership was centre stage in the breakout program of the Philanthropy Leadership Summit 2025, as part of the Deeper dive into real life leadership sessions. A full house gathered for Lighting the way: Lessons from trailblazers for bold and inclusive leadership—a powerful conversation about what courageous, inclusive leadership looks like in practice.
With opening remarks from Melissa Smith, Founder of She Gives, and closing reflections from Julie Reilly OAM, CEO of Australians Investing in Women (AIIW), the discussion was enriched by the wisdom and experience of trailblazing panellists:

Guided with insight and care by moderator Cathy Scalzo, AIIW Chair and Principal of the Scalzo Family Office, the conversation revealed the essence of leadership in today’s complex landscape: bold strategic vision, a deep understanding of power, active listening, storytelling, pragmatism, agility, and a clear orientation to action.
As panellist Upenyu Mawande powerfully reminded us, transformational change requires rejecting the “narcissism of small differences.” The scale of the challenges before us demands collaboration over competition.
We heard a call for bridges between funders and doers, ensuring that social investments deliver dignity and justice. Leadership also means helping the helpers—sustaining those who drive social change on the ground.
The invitation was clear: support women’s leadership in philanthropy and in driving systemic change. Tools such as AIIW’s Gender-wise resources, Plan International’s Gender Compass, and movements like She Gives are guiding lights for funders committed to action.
