Project Description

Lou’s Place is on the move! After 21 years in our terrace in Kings Cross, we are bursting at the seams. We are limited in the number of people we can have in the house, the activities and programs we can run, the people we can feed and ultimately the number of women we can help. With the help of a generous community we have been able to purchase a more suitable building in Redfern. However, before we can move the service we need to carry out compliance and access work, add bathrooms and a kitchen as well as fitting it out to be a warm and welcoming environment. We are seeking funding to proceed with these works.

Expected Outcomes

In moving Lou's Place to new premises we aim to:

  • Immediately increase the number of women we help by 50%
  • Within 5 years, double the number of women we help
  • Have sufficient private and multipurpose spaces to run innovative and tailored activities and programs
  • Provide a holistic client approach to address Mental Health, Domestic Violence, Homelessness and Addiction issues.

Evaluation of the new premises acquisition will be based on our ability to increase the number of women that we are able to help. All clients who visit Lou’s Place are required to register at reception and we also record all women participating in our online programs. We will therefore be able to have a clear idea as to whether these outcomes have been achieved in our new premises.

Project Data & Lessons

At Lou’s Place, we see firsthand how the economic impacts of COVID-19 are disproportionately affecting women, trapping them in situations of violence and abuse due to financial dependence, unemployment, a lack of affordable accommodation and lessened means to escape their abusers. Refuges and professional support are more essential than ever in empowering women to rebuild their lives.

In providing a safe, warm and welcoming environment, this project will significantly improve our capability to help many more vulnerable women. The additional space will benefit our professional staff and volunteers, as well as greatly enhancing the counselling experience for our clients, who have often experienced multiple traumas and require tailored assistance.

Lou's Place is well connected in the community services sector and will continue to cross refer and share lessons with other services across our city. Lou's Place is a member of NCOSS, NADA, DVNSW, MHCC and Homelessness NSW and all of these organisations present opportunities for us to promote our work with other members and have a meaningful and lasting impact on the women who need our support.

About The Marmalade Foundation (operates Lou's Place)

Lou’s Place is a daytime refuge for women based in Kings Cross. We are open to ALL women, including Transgender women. Many of the women we support are victim survivors of trauma including domestic violence and childhood sexual abuse. In turn our daily work supports women with addiction, cognitive impairment, mental illness and child protection issues. Lou’s Place works from a social justice, person centred strengths based approach. We provide a free breakfast and lunch, drop in services Monday to Friday, a program of free activities, case management services and therapeutic group work programs. At any one time approximately 20% of Lou’s Place clients are rough sleepers who rely on the shower and laundry facilities at Lou’s Place. Over 70% of Lou’s Place clients are homeless women, and the remaining clients are typically from local Public housing communities. Lou’s Place receives no government funding and relies on the generous support of the community. We have six professional staff members who are supported by over 100 volunteers every month. These volunteers bring with them their skills and talents that they share with clients. Our mission is to provide a safe place where women’s basic needs are met, a community in which to heal and the support to empower women to rebuild their lives.
