Closing the Gender Gap in Housing – A Roadmap for Change

Australia’s housing system is not gender neutral. Women face distinct barriers to housing security and ownership, shaped by factors including the gender pay gap, caring responsibilities, lower retirement savings, and the impacts of gender-based violence.

Developed by Australians Investing in Women (AIIW) and Per Capita Australia, this landmark roadmap draws on three years of research and consultation with more than 100 stakeholders across government, philanthropy, impact investment, housing and community sectors.

The research reveals the growing housing inequities affecting women and outlines practical, evidence-based solutions to create a more equitable housing system. It includes recommendations for governments, philanthropic organisations, impact investors and housing providers, alongside real-world examples of initiatives already delivering results.

Whether you’re shaping policy, allocating capital, delivering housing, or seeking to better understand the challenges women face, this roadmap provides a clear framework for action towards a housing system that works for everyone.
